On 18 October 2024, in India, the Government said the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) had sanctioned three pilot projects for the use of hydrogen in steel production under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, to identify and demonstrate green hydrogen-based steelmaking technologies. The projects are by Matrix Gas and Renewables Ltd (consortium with Gensol Engineering, IIT Bhubaneswar and Metsol AB, Sweden; 50 tonnes per day), Simplex Castings Ltd (consortium with BSBK, Ten Eight Investment and IIT Bhilai; 40 TPD) and Steel Authority of India Ltd (Ranchi; 3,200 TPD).
