MeitY Secretary S. Krishnan launched an indigenously developed 30 kW Wide Band Gap (WBG)-based Integrated Drive System for electric vehicles at IIT Madras, Chennai, on 2 March 2026.

Summary

MeitY Secretary S. Krishnan launched an indigenously developed 30 kW Wide Band Gap (WBG)-based Integrated Drive System (IDS) for electric vehicles at IIT Madras, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, on 2 March 2026. The system was developed by C-DAC Thiruvananthapuram with IIT Madras and Lucas TVS under the National Mission on Power Electronics Technology (NaMPET). The 30 kW class suits India's fast-growing electric passenger-vehicle segment, such as compact cars and fleet platforms, where high-performance powertrains and semiconductor drive components are now largely imported. The technology has been validated with Lucas TVS and is ready for commercialisation, which MeitY says will cut import dependence and costs and open opportunities for MSMEs in power electronics.
