The Department of Fisheries approved the Andaman & Nicobar Administration's proposal for a Smart and Integrated Fishing Harbour at Mayabunder at an estimated ₹199.24 crore, with 100% Central Financial Assistance under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY). Built in line with the Blue Port Initiative, it will have IoT-enabled systems and digital traceability, berthing for 430 fishing vessels and an annual fish landing capacity of 9,900 tonnes, and is expected to help combat Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing. The islands have an Exclusive Economic Zone of about 6 lakh sq km.
