He won on the first ballot with 85.9% of the points (131,674 votes), far ahead of former Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland (8.0%), Karina Gould (3.2%) and Frank Baylis (3.0%); about 151,899 registered Liberals voted. The race followed Justin Trudeau's January announcement that he would resign once a new leader was chosen. Carney, who had never been elected to Parliament, vowed to stand up to US President Donald Trump in the trade war.
