Mangrove GIS portal launched at Bhuj as Gujarat nears its MISHTI mangrove target

On 13 September 2026, Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav launched the Mangrove GIS (MGIS) Portal and released the Mangroves Atlas of Gujarat at a mangrove conservation workshop in Bhuj, Kachchh.

The Mangrove GIS (MGIS) Portal, meant to support science-based decisions and monitoring of mangrove habitats, was launched by Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav at a Workshop on Mangrove Conservation, Restoration and Sustainable Management in Bhuj. He also released a coffee table book on Kachchh mangroves and the Mangroves Atlas of Gujarat. Reviewing the MISHTI programme, he said Gujarat has covered 27,652 hectares against its 2023–27 target of 29,250 hectares, including 12,450 hectares in the difficult Kori Creek region. He felicitated the Guneri Inland Mangrove Village Biodiversity Management Committee for protecting the rare Guneri inland mangroves, which grow away from the coast. MISHTI (Mangrove Initiative for Shoreline Habitats & Tangible Incomes) was announced in the Union Budget 2023-24 and launched on World Environment Day, 5 June 2023, to restore about 540 sq km of mangroves.
