An avalanche struck a Border Roads Organisation (BRO) camp near Mana village in Chamoli district, Uttarakhand, on the morning of 28 February 2025, burying 54 workers in their container shelters. The search and rescue operation, led by the Army with the ITBP, Air Force, NDRF, SDRF and the district administration, ended on 2 March 2025 when the bodies of the last four missing workers were recovered. Forty-six workers were rescued and eight died. A drone-based 'intelligent buried object detection system' was airlifted from Delhi to help find the last buried containers, and Army, Air Force and hired civil helicopters evacuated the rescued workers to the military hospital at Jyotirmath (Joshimath).
