Representatives of Libya's rival political institutions signed a UN-facilitated agreement at the headquarters of the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) in Tripoli on 30 August 2026. The deal came out of a 'Smaller Convening', known as the 4+4 format, with two representatives from each of Libya's four main institutions. Under the agreement, legislative and presidential elections are to be held within 24 months under a single executive authority and unified national institutions, the Board of Commissioners of the High National Elections Commission (HNEC) is to be reconstituted, and the electoral laws are to be amended. Libya's national election set for December 2021 had collapsed over disputes about candidate eligibility.
