On 5 November 2024 at Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata, the keel laying of Yard 3037 and 3038, the first and second Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels (NGOPV), was held, presided by West Bengal Governor Dr C V Ananda Bose. Contracts for indigenous design and construction of 11 NGOPVs were signed in March 2023: seven with Goa Shipyard and four with GRSE. The vessels of about 3,000 tonnes are meant for coastal defence and surveillance, search and rescue, protection of offshore assets and anti-piracy.
