The keel laying of the second of five Fleet Support Ships was held at L&T Shipyard, Kattupalli, near Chennai, on 12 March 2025, in the presence of Vice Admiral Rajaram Swaminathan, Controller Warship Production and Acquisition. The Navy contracted Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL) for the five ships in August 2023, and HSL has sub-contracted two of them to L&T Shipyard to use the country's shipbuilding capacity and meet delivery timelines from mid-2027. The ships, of over 40,000 tonnes, will replenish fleet ships at sea with fuel, water, ammunition and stores, and can be used for humanitarian assistance and disaster relief.
