Kazakhstan holds first election to unicameral Kurultai; pro-Tokayev Adilet wins big

Kazakhstan held its first election to the new single-chamber Kurultai on 23 August 2026, and the newly formed pro-government Adilet party won over 71% of the vote.

Summary

Kazakhstan voted on 23 August 2026 in the first election to the Kurultai, a new 145-member single-chamber parliament created by a constitution adopted earlier in 2026 that merged the previous two chambers into one. Exit polls on election day gave the newly formed pro-government Adilet party 70–72% of the vote, and the election commission later confirmed it had won more than 71%, with turnout of about 74%. Four other parties also entered parliament: Respublika, Ak Zhol, the Nationwide Social Democratic Party and Auyl, all seen as broadly supportive of President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. Adilet, founded earlier this year by Tokayev's top aides, absorbed the previous ruling party, Amanat.
