JNCASR scientists develop sodium-ion battery that charges 80% in six minutes

Scientists at JNCASR, Bengaluru, an autonomous DST institute, have developed a NASICON-based sodium-ion battery that charges up to 80% in six minutes and lasts over 3,000 charge cycles, DST said on 19 May 2025.

Summary

A research team at the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR), Bengaluru, an autonomous institute of the Department of Science and Technology, has developed a super-fast-charging sodium-ion battery based on NASICON-type cathode and anode materials, DST said on 19 May 2025. It can charge up to 80% in six minutes and last over 3,000 charge cycles. Led by Prof. Premkumar Senguttuvan and PhD scholar Biplab Patra, the team engineered a new anode material by shrinking particles to nanoscale, wrapping them in a thin carbon coat and adding a little aluminium. Since sodium is cheap and abundant in India unlike lithium, the work supports self-reliance in energy storage, though more development is needed before commercial use.
