Parliament passes Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Bill, 2026

The Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Bill, 2026 completed its passage through Parliament when the Rajya Sabha passed it on 2 April 2026; the Lok Sabha had passed it on 1 April, five days after its introduction on 27 March. The Bill amends 784 provisions across 79 Central Acts administered by 23 ministries: 717 provisions are decriminalised to promote ease of doing business and 67 are amended to facilitate ease of living, rationalising more than 1,000 offences. It grew out of the Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Bill, 2025, introduced in the Lok Sabha on 18 August 2025 to amend 355 provisions in 16 Acts, which a Lok Sabha Select Committee chaired by Tejasvi Surya examined over 49 sittings before reporting on 13 March 2026 and recommending decriminalisation across 62 more Acts.
