The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, signed an MoU with the Government of Jammu and Kashmir on 6 March 2025, on the sidelines of the ministry's Chintan Shivir in Srinagar, in the presence of Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. Of India's 111 national waterways, J&K has three: the Chenab (NW-26), the Jhelum (NW-49) and the Ravi (NW-84). IWAI will provide ten floating jetties and passenger facilities at an approximate cost of ₹100 crore: two on the Chenab at Akhnoor and Reasi, seven on the Jhelum in Srinagar and Bandipora, and one at Sohar on the Ravi. The J&K government will provide land, clearances and cruise operators.
