INS Taragiri, the fourth ship of the Project 17A (Nilgiri) class of stealth frigates, was commissioned into the Indian Navy at Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, on 3 April 2026 in the presence of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. The frigate displaces about 6,670 tonnes, was designed by the Warship Design Bureau and built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited with MSME support, and has over 75% indigenous content. It uses stealth technology for a reduced radar signature and carries modern radar, sonar and missile systems including BrahMos and surface-to-air missiles. SAIL said it supplied the full requirement of about 4,000 tonnes of special-grade steel plates from its Bokaro, Bhilai and Rourkela plants, as it had for INS Vikrant and the first three Project 17A ships, Nilgiri, Himgiri and Udaygiri.
