Indigenous customised jaw-joint (TMJ) implant fitted in four patients at MAIDS, New Delhi

On 7 October 2025 the Health Ministry announced that the clinical team at the Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences (MAIDS), New Delhi — an ICMR Centre for Advanced Research — successfully performed customised Temporo-Mandibular Joint (TMJ) implant procedures on four patients. The implant was developed indigenously at the ICMR-DHR MedTech Product Development Acceleration Gateway of India (mPRAGATI) at IIT Delhi, coordinated by ICMR's Medical Device and Diagnostics Mission Secretariat. Custom-designed for jaw movement and stability with a dedicated muscle-attachment feature, it costs nearly one-fifth of Indian industry-made versions and one-eighth to one-tenth of imported ones, and local manufacturing cuts turnaround to about two weeks. Health Minister J.P. Nadda said it reflects the growing strength of India's MedTech sector.
