Indian researchers develop technique to study charging-up in GEM detectors for FAIR's CBM experiment
Researchers developed a technique using a radioactive source to study radiation effects on Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) detectors, the Ministry of Science and Technology said on 7 February 2025, a step for India's role in the FAIR project in Germany.
Summary
Researchers have developed a technique using a radioactive source to simplify the study of radiation-induced charging-up in Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) detectors, the Ministry of Science and Technology said on 7 February 2025. GEM detectors, first introduced by Fabio Sauli in 1997, use a 50-micrometre Kapton foil with copper cladding to amplify signals from ionising radiation and are used as tracking devices in high-energy physics. India has full responsibility for building all the GEM chambers for the future Compressed Baryonic Matter (CBM) experiment at the Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) in Germany.
