Indian Railways produced a record 1,681 locomotives in FY 2024-25, 19% more than the 1,472 of the previous year, the Railway Ministry said on 2 April 2025.

Indian Railways' locomotive units produced a record 1,681 locomotives in the financial year 2024-25, 209 or 19% more than the 1,472 built in 2023-24, the Ministry of Railways said on 2 April 2025. The ministry said this exceeds the combined locomotive production of the United States, Europe, South America, Africa and Australia. Chittaranjan Locomotive Works built 700, Banaras Locomotive Works 477, Patiala Locomotive Works 304, and the Madhepura and Marhowrah units 100 each. Most were freight locomotives, including 1,047 WAG-9/9H units. Between 2014 and 2024, 9,168 locomotives were produced, an annual average of about 917, against 4,695 between 2004 and 2014.
