Indian Railways has electrified 99.6% of its broad gauge network
Indian Railways has electrified about 99.6% of its broad gauge network, second only to Switzerland in railway electrification as per the UIC's June 2025 report, the Railways Ministry said on 22 July 2026.

Indian Railways electrified 48,072 route km during 2014-26, compared with 21,801 route km in about 60 years before 2014. Diesel consumption for traction fell from 293 crore litres in 2015-16 to 108 crore litres in 2024-25. Indian Railways has commissioned over 1,260 MW of solar and wind capacity, and all new line and multi-tracking projects are being built with electrification.
