On 29 November 2024, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) conducted the 11th edition of the National Maritime Search and Rescue Exercise (SAREX-2024) off the Kochi coast, Kerala. The two-day exercise was inaugurated by Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh on 28 November and reviewed by ICG Director General Paramesh Sivamani. Its theme was 'Enhancing Search and Rescue Capabilities Through Regional Collaboration'. The sea phase simulated the crash of a passenger aircraft carrying 250 passengers about 150 nautical miles northwest of Kochi, triggering a coordinated Mass Rescue Operation. The exercise aimed to validate standard operating procedures for mass rescue operations and drew members of the National Maritime Search and Rescue Board and foreign delegates.
