Indian Chemical Council wins the 2024 OPCW-The Hague Award

On 25 November 2024 in The Hague, the Indian Chemical Council received the 2024 OPCW-The Hague Award during the 29th Conference of the States Parties of the OPCW — the first time the award recognised a chemical industry body.

Summary

On 25 November 2024, the 2024 OPCW-The Hague Award was conferred on the Indian Chemical Council (ICC) at a ceremony during the 29th Session of the Conference of the States Parties (CSP) of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) in The Hague. It was the first time the award recognised a chemical industry body. OPCW Director-General Fernando Arias and The Hague's Mayor Jan van Zanen presented it; ICC Director General D. Sothi Selvam received it. The ICC represents more than 80% of India's chemical industry, valued at $220 billion. Background from the release: the Chemical Weapons Convention came into force in 1997 and has 193 States Parties, India is an original signatory, and the National Authority Chemical Weapons Convention (NACWC) implements it in India; the OPCW won the 2013 Nobel Peace Prize and set up the award with the Municipality of The Hague in 2014.
