This is the third time India will chair the Kimberley Process, a tripartite initiative of governments, the international diamond industry and civil society to stop trade in 'conflict diamonds'. The Kimberley Process Certification Scheme came into effect on 1 January 2003; the KP has 60 participants, with the European Union and its member states counted as one, and covers over 99% of global rough diamond trade.
