India's 51st Doppler Weather Radar inaugurated at Sambalpur, Odisha

On 17 September 2026, Earth Sciences Minister Dr Jitendra Singh virtually inaugurated India's 51st Doppler Weather Radar at Sambalpur, Odisha, in the presence of Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi.

Summary

The Sambalpur Doppler Weather Radar is Odisha's third, after Gopalpur and Paradip, and takes India's network to 51 radars. Dr Jitendra Singh said the network has grown from 14 radars in 2014 to 51, and around 40 more are planned under Mission Mausam. The Sambalpur radar will improve weather monitoring over Western Odisha and adjoining parts of southern Jharkhand, northern Chhattisgarh, north Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal. The Minister also said IMD extends weather and early warning support to 13 neighbouring countries.
