IIA astronomers study tiny loops in the solar corona

On 7 July 2025, DST said astronomers at the Indian Institute of Astrophysics had used high-resolution imaging and spectroscopy to study tiny, hot loops in the solar corona linked to magnetic reconnection.

Summary

Astronomers at the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA), an autonomous institution of the Department of Science and Technology, and collaborators studied tiny loops in the Sun's corona using high-resolution imaging and spectroscopy, the DST said on 7 July 2025. Combining data from the Goode Solar Telescope at BBSO, NASA's Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) and the Solar Dynamics Observatory, the team detected enormous broadening of spectral lines, an observation interpreted as magnetic reconnection.

Key facts

Institute
Indian Institute of Astrophysics (autonomous, DST)
Data
Goode Solar Telescope (BBSO), NASA IRIS, SDO
Finding
Tiny hot coronal loops; spectral-line broadening indicating magnetic reconnection
