On 8 November 2024, the Department of Animal Husbandry & Dairying said it had facilitated the designation of ICAR-National Research Centre on Equines, Hisar, Haryana, as a World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) Reference Laboratory for Equine Piroplasmosis, a blood-borne disease of horses, donkeys and mules. The designation will be formally announced at the 92nd WOAH General Session in May 2025. According to the 20th Livestock Census, India has about 0.55 million equines.
