IASST Guwahati develops optical sensing platform for cholesterol detection

Researchers at the Institute of Advanced Study in Science and Technology (IASST), Guwahati, developed an optical sensing platform for cholesterol detection using silk fibre functionalised with phosphorene quantum dots, DST said on 23 April 2025.

Summary

An interdisciplinary team at the Institute of Advanced Study in Science and Technology (IASST), Guwahati, an autonomous institute of the Department of Science and Technology, has developed a sensitive, eco-friendly and low-cost optical sensing platform for cholesterol detection based on silk fibre functionalised with phosphorene quantum dots. Abnormal cholesterol levels are linked to diseases such as atherosclerosis, venous thrombosis, cardiovascular disease and hypertension, so the platform could help early point-of-care detection. The work was published in the journal Nanoscale of the Royal Society of Chemistry.
