Heavy Water Board and BARC begin building Iodine-Sulphur process hydrogen demonstration plant in Mumbai

The Heavy Water Board, with BARC, held the groundbreaking of a demonstration plant to produce hydrogen by thermochemical splitting of water using the Iodine-Sulphur process at Chembur, Mumbai, on 3 March 2025.

Summary

The Heavy Water Board (HWB), in collaboration with the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), held the groundbreaking ceremony on 3 March 2025 for a demonstration plant that will produce hydrogen by thermochemical splitting of water using the Iodine-Sulphur (I-S) process. The plant is located at the Heavy Water Board Facilities in RCF, Chembur, Mumbai. The ceremony was attended by Dr Ajit Kumar Mohanty, Secretary, Department of Atomic Energy and Chairman, Atomic Energy Commission, BARC Director Vivek Bhasin and HWB Chairman S. Satyakumar. The I-S process splits water using heat in a chemical cycle and, when coupled with nuclear energy, offers an efficient route to clean hydrogen.
