The Household Consumption Expenditure Survey (HCES) 2023-24 factsheet was released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) on 27 December 2024. Average monthly per capita consumption expenditure (MPCE) was ₹4,122 in rural India and ₹6,996 in urban India without imputation, and ₹4,247 and ₹7,078 when the imputed value of items received free through welfare programmes is included. In nominal terms, MPCE rose by about 9% in rural areas and 8% in urban areas over 2022-23. Among States, MPCE was highest in Sikkim and lowest in Chhattisgarh, while the rural-urban difference was widest in Meghalaya (104%), followed by Jharkhand (83%) and Chhattisgarh (80%). Non-food items made up 53% of rural and 60% of urban MPCE. The estimates are based on 2,61,953 households surveyed from August 2023 to July 2024.
