On 18 November 2024, Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav announced that Chhattisgarh had notified the Guru Ghasidas-Tamor Pingla Tiger Reserve, on the advice of the NTCA, as India's 56th tiger reserve. Spread over 2,829.38 sq km across the Manendragarh-Chirmiri-Bharatpur, Korea, Surajpur and Balrampur districts, it has a core of 2,049.2 sq km, comprising Guru Ghasidas National Park and Tamor Pingla Wildlife Sanctuary, and a buffer of 780.15 sq km. It is the third largest tiger reserve after Nagarjunasagar-Srisailam (Andhra Pradesh) and Manas (Assam). It adjoins Sanjay Dubri Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh and is connected to Bandhavgarh (MP) and Palamau (Jharkhand). Chhattisgarh now has four tiger reserves.
