On 4 December 2024, at around 9:30 am at the entrance of the Golden Temple in Amritsar, Punjab, Narain Singh Chaura pulled out a gun and fired at Shiromani Akali Dal leader Sukhbir Singh Badal. Assistant Sub-Inspector Jasbir Singh, in plainclothes beside Badal, grabbed the attacker's hands and the bullet hit the shrine's entrance wall; Badal escaped unhurt and Chaura was overpowered. Badal was on the second day of religious penance for the 'mistakes' of the SAD government in Punjab from 2007 to 2017.
