A fire at the Birch by Romeo Lane nightclub in Arpora, North Goa, on the night of 6 December 2025 killed 25 people, including staff and tourists, and injured six. After the Arpora fire, Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant ordered a magisterial inquiry to identify the cause and fix responsibility, and three officials, the then Director of Panchayats, the then Member Secretary of the Goa State Pollution Control Board and the then Secretary of Arpora-Nagoa village panchayat, were suspended for allowing the club to start operating in 2023. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced an ex gratia of ₹2 lakh from the PMNRF for the next of kin of each deceased and ₹50,000 for the injured, and the Goa government paid ₹5 lakh to each bereaved family.
