Former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh dies at AIIMS, New Delhi

Dr Manmohan Singh, Prime Minister of India from 2004 to 2014 and Finance Minister from 1991 to 1996, died at AIIMS, New Delhi, on 26 December 2024.

Summary

Dr Manmohan Singh, former Prime Minister of India, died at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, on 26 December 2024, the Government of India announced. Born on 26 September 1932 in village Gah, West Punjab, in undivided India, he took a Master's in Economics from Panjab University in 1954, the Economics Tripos from the University of Cambridge in 1957 and a D.Phil from the University of Oxford in 1962. He was Chief Economic Adviser in the Finance Ministry (1972-76), Secretary of the Department of Economic Affairs (1976-80), Member Secretary of the Planning Commission (1980-82) and Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (September 1982 to January 1985). As Finance Minister from 1991 to 1996 he ushered in economic reforms, and he was Prime Minister from 22 May 2004 to 2014 over two terms. His honours included the Padma Vibhushan (1987) and the Adam Smith Prize of the University of Cambridge (1956).
