Amit Shah flags off India's first LNG-powered train from Sabarmati, opens ₹1,472 crore projects in Ahmedabad

On 27 September 2026 Union Home Minister Amit Shah flagged off the country's first LNG-powered train from Sabarmati Railway Station in Ahmedabad and inaugurated railway projects worth ₹1,472 crore.

Summary

Shah also inaugurated a WAG-12 maintenance shed for 12,000-horsepower twin-section electric locomotives, which can haul nearly as much freight as 600 trucks. Kavach was introduced on the Sabarmati–Kalol–Sabarmati, Ahmedabad–Palanpur and Ahmedabad–Samakhiyali sections, and doubling work began on the Sabarmati–Sarkhej route. Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel was present. Shah said railway diesel consumption fell from 293 crore litres in 2015–16 to 108 crore litres in 2024–25 and electrification has reached 99.6%.
