Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari and New and Renewable Energy Minister Pralhad Joshi flagged off India's first trials of hydrogen-powered heavy-duty trucks, by Tata Motors, in New Delhi on 4 March 2025. The trial is funded by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy under the National Green Hydrogen Mission. It will run for up to 24 months with 16 trucks using hydrogen internal combustion engines (H2-ICE) and fuel cells (H2-FCEV), on freight routes around Mumbai, Pune, Delhi-NCR, Surat, Vadodara, Jamshedpur and Kalinganagar, to test commercial viability for long-haul cargo and the refuelling infrastructure needed.
