India's first fully digitised Marine Fisheries Census launched at Kochi

The National Marine Fisheries Census 2025, the first to be fully digitised, was launched at ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI), Kochi, on 31 October 2025 by Union Minister of State George Kurian. The 45-day enumeration will run from 3 November to 18 December and cover over 1.2 million fisher households in 4,000 marine fishing villages across nine coastal states and four Union Territories. Data will be collected through two mobile apps developed by CMFRI, VyAS Bharat and VyAS Sutra. The census is run by the Department of Fisheries under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), with CMFRI as nodal agency and the Fishery Survey of India as operational partner.
