Nine migrant workers from Assam were killed and one injured on 30 September 2025 when iron scaffolding put up to build a concrete arch collapsed at the construction site of the 1,320 MW Ennore Special Economic Zone thermal power project near Ponneri, north of Chennai. The workers were working more than 20 feet above the ground. Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) is the main contractor for the project. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced an ex-gratia of ₹2 lakh from the PMNRF for each deceased's next of kin and ₹50,000 for the injured. Police registered a case and began an investigation.
