On 23 October 2024, at Heavy Water Board Facilities (HWBF), Talcher, Dr A.K. Mohanty, Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission and Secretary, Department of Atomic Energy, inaugurated an Electronics Grade Boron-11 (B-11) Enrichment Facility. With the technology demonstration of B-11 enrichment to electronics grade (above 99.8%), India has joined the elite club of nations having this technology. Electronics-grade B-11 is used to produce BF3 gas, a p-type dopant in semiconductor chip manufacturing. HWBF Talcher, a sub-unit of the Heavy Water Board, Mumbai, also produces Boron-10 isotopes for the three-stage nuclear power programme.
