DST announces India's first cluster of five CCU testbeds in the cement sector
On National Technology Day, 11 May 2025, the Department of Science and Technology announced five Carbon Capture and Utilisation (CCU) testbeds in the cement sector, set up in academia–industry partnership under a PPP model.
Summary
The Department of Science and Technology (DST) announced five Carbon Capture and Utilisation (CCU) testbeds in the cement sector on National Technology Day, 11 May 2025, and Dr Jitendra Singh handed over grants to the teams. The testbeds, approved under a call by DST's Energy and Sustainable Technology (CEST) Division, form a first-of-its-kind academia–industry cluster under a public–private partnership model. They include a pilot at the National Council for Cement and Building Materials, Ballabhgarh (Haryana), with JK Cement, to capture 2 tonnes of CO₂ a day; IIT Kanpur with JSW Cement (mineralisation); IIT Bombay with Dalmia Cement (catalyst-driven capture); CSIR-IIP, IIT Tirupati and IISc with JSW Cement (Vacuum Swing Adsorption); and IIT Madras and BITS Pilani Goa with UltraTech Cement. DST linked the effort to India's goal of a carbon-neutral economy by 2070.
