The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) conducted three successive flight trials of the Very Short-Range Air Defence System (VSHORADS) from the Integrated Test Range, Chandipur, off the coast of Odisha, as announced on 27 February 2026. In all three tests the missiles intercepted and destroyed high-speed aerial targets mimicking enemy aircraft; the trials were in final deployment configuration, with field operators carrying out target acquisition and firing. VSHORADS is a man-portable air defence system (MANPADS) designed and developed indigenously by Research Centre Imarat (RCI) with other DRDO laboratories and industry partners, and can meet the needs of the Army, Navy and Air Force. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said the system can soon be inducted into the armed forces.
