On 6 October 2025 at a national workshop at DRDO Bhawan, New Delhi, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), with the Integrated Defence Staff (IDS) and the Tri-Services, released the Indian Radio Software Architecture (IRSA) standard 1.0 to enable interoperability in military communication (PIB, 7 October 2025). IRSA is a comprehensive software specification for Software Defined Radios (SDRs), defining standardised interfaces, APIs, execution environments and waveform portability mechanisms, and is designed to ensure waveform portability, SDR interoperability, certification and conformance. The initiative traces its origin to 2021, when the need for a national SDR software standard was felt; a DRDO-led core team began work in 2022. DRDO Chairman Dr Samir V Kamat was the chief guest, with Chief of Integrated Defence Staff Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit and IIT Gandhinagar Director Dr Rajat Moona as guests of honour.
