DRDO develops indigenous high-pressure polymeric membrane for seawater desalination

DRDO's Kanpur-based Defence Materials Stores and Research & Development Establishment (DMSRDE) developed an indigenous nanoporous multilayered polymeric membrane for high-pressure seawater desalination on Indian Coast Guard ships, DRDO said on 15 May 2025.

Summary

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) said on 15 May 2025 that it had developed an indigenous nanoporous multilayered polymeric membrane for high-pressure seawater desalination. The technology was developed by the Defence Materials Stores and Research & Development Establishment (DMSRDE), DRDO's Kanpur-based laboratory, for desalination plants on Indian Coast Guard ships, addressing stability on exposure to chloride ions. It was completed in eight months. Initial technical, safety and performance trials on an ICG Offshore Patrol Vessel were satisfactory; final operational clearance will follow 500 hours of operational testing.
