Nationwide testing of indigenous Cell Broadcast disaster-alert system under way
On 30 June 2025 in New Delhi, the Department of Telecommunications said that, with NDMA, nationwide testing of an indigenous Cell Broadcast system for disaster alerts is under way, adding to the SMS-based SACHET system.

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) said on 30 June 2025 that, together with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), it is testing an indigenous Cell Broadcast (CB) system nationwide for time-critical alerts such as tsunamis, earthquakes, lightning, gas leaks and chemical hazards. NDMA already runs the Integrated Alert System (SACHET), developed by the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT) and based on the Common Alerting Protocol (CAP) recommended by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). SACHET is operational in all 36 States and UTs and has sent over 6,899 crore SMS alerts in more than 19 Indian languages.
