DoT introduces Financial Fraud Risk Indicator to help banks and UPI providers prevent cyber fraud

The Department of Telecommunications announced on 21 May 2025 that it will share a 'Financial Fraud Risk Indicator' (FRI), which classifies mobile numbers as Medium, High or Very High risk of financial fraud, with banks, NBFCs and UPI service providers.

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) announced on 21 May 2025 the sharing of the 'Financial Fraud Risk Indicator' (FRI) with stakeholders. FRI is an output of a multi-dimensional analytical tool developed under DoT's Digital Intelligence Platform (DIP). It classifies a mobile number as associated with Medium, High or Very High risk of financial fraud, based on inputs from I4C's National Cybercrime Reporting Portal, DoT's Chakshu platform and intelligence shared by banks and financial institutions. Banks, NBFCs and UPI service providers can use it to add validation checks and customer protection measures when a digital payment is proposed to a flagged number.
