On 22 October 2025, Coal India Limited (CIL) signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Indian Institute of Technology Madras to set up a 'Centre for Sustainable Energy' at IIT Madras. CIL Director (Technical) Achyut Ghatak and IIT Madras Director V. Kamakoti signed it in the presence of CIL Chairman P.M. Prasad. Funded by CIL, the Centre will focus on repurposing coal mines, low-carbon technologies and using coal as a feedstock in a clean energy future, and will support PhD, postdoctoral and internship programmes.
