The Government of India and the state governments of Assam and Nagaland signed a tripartite MoU on 11 June 2026 to facilitate mineral oil operations in the Assam–Nagaland boundary areas, in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio were present. The agreement commits the three governments to a stable and secure environment for petroleum exploration and production in identified 'Areas of Interest'. Amit Shah said the MoU could raise the current extraction capacity of 1,000–1,500 barrels per day by more than tenfold, called it an example of cooperative federalism, and noted that twelve agreements signed in the North-East since 2019 have helped cut violence by about 80 per cent.
