CeNS Bengaluru develops boron nitride nanosheet strategy to regulate infrared radiation

Scientists at the Centre for Nano and Soft Matter Sciences, Bengaluru developed a way to regulate infrared radiation using hexagonal boron nitride nanosheets, DST said on 18 December 2024.

Summary

Scientists at the Centre for Nano and Soft Matter Sciences (CeNS), Bengaluru, an autonomous institute of the Department of Science and Technology, developed a strategy to control and regulate infrared (IR) radiation, DST said on 18 December 2024. The method uses solution-processed two-dimensional nanoflakes of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN), developed by Dr HSSR Matte and his student Priyabrata Sahoo, assembled in a polymer network liquid crystal. Each constituent is IR transparent, but their combination produces a device effective in IR regulation, with potential use as a radiative heat barrier, in thermal camouflage and in thermal management. IR makes up about 50% of the Sun's radiation.
