On 14 November 2024 in Nagpur, Maharashtra, the 15th meeting of the National Power Committee (NPC), chaired by Central Electricity Authority (CEA) Chairperson Ghansyam Prasad, approved the Uniform Protection Protocol for users of the Indian grid for pan-India implementation; the CEA announced the approval on 16 November. Prepared by the NPC with the Regional Power Committees as required by IEGC 2023, the protocol covers protection of generating units including renewables and battery storage, substations, transmission lines and HVDC terminals, along with disturbance reporting, protection audits and monthly performance monitoring. It applies to all regional entities, generators, SLDCs, RLDCs, CTU, STUs and transmission licensees connected at 220 kV (132 kV in the North-East) and above, and supports integrating 450 GW of renewable energy by 2030.
