CEA concurs record six pumped storage project DPRs of about 7.5 GW in 2024-25

The Central Electricity Authority concurred Detailed Project Reports of six hydro pumped storage projects with about 7.5 GW capacity in 2024-25, a record, and aims to concur at least 13 projects of about 22 GW in 2025-26.

Summary

The Central Electricity Authority (CEA) concurred Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) of a record six hydro pumped storage projects (PSPs) with a combined capacity of about 7.5 GW during 2024-25, the Ministry of Power said on 12 April 2025. They are Upper Indravati (600 MW, Odisha), Sharavathy (2,000 MW, Karnataka), Bhivpuri (1,000 MW, Maharashtra), Bhavali (1,500 MW, Maharashtra), MP-30 (1,920 MW, Madhya Pradesh) and Chitravathi (500 MW, Andhra Pradesh). For 2025-26, CEA targets concurrence of at least 13 PSPs of about 22 GW. India's pumped storage potential is estimated at over 200 GW. DPRs are submitted through the 'Jalvi Store' portal and appraised with the Central Water Commission (CWC), Geological Survey of India (GSI) and Central Soil and Materials Research Station (CSMRS).
