The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved on 10 September 2025 the doubling of the 177 km Bhagalpur–Dumka–Rampurhat single railway line section in Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal at a total cost of about ₹3,169 crore. The project covers five districts in three states and is planned under the PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan. The section connects pilgrimage destinations such as Deoghar (Baba Baidyanath Dham) and Tarapith (Shakti Peeth), and the project will improve connectivity to about 441 villages with a population of about 28.72 lakh, including three aspirational districts. The government said the project would help cut oil imports by 5 crore litres and CO2 emissions by 24 crore kg.
