Cabinet approves ₹11,828.79-crore expansion of five new IITs at Tirupati, Palakkad, Bhilai, Jammu and Dharwad
The Union Cabinet on 7 May 2025 approved Phase-B expansion of five IITs set up after 2014, at a cost of ₹11,828.79 crore over 2025-26 to 2028-29, raising their student capacity from 7,111 to 13,687.

The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 7 May 2025 approved expansion of academic and infrastructure capacity (Phase-B construction) of five new IITs: IIT Tirupati (Andhra Pradesh), IIT Palakkad (Kerala), IIT Bhilai (Chhattisgarh), IIT Jammu (Jammu & Kashmir) and IIT Dharwad (Karnataka). The total cost is ₹11,828.79 crore over four years, 2025-26 to 2028-29. The Cabinet also approved 130 faculty posts at Professor level (Level 14 and above). On completion, the five IITs will cater to 13,687 students against the current 7,111, an increase of 6,576. Five new research parks are also coming up to strengthen industry-academia linkage.
