Cabinet clears ₹3,590.73-crore four-laning of NH-22 up to Nepal border in Bihar

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on 19 August 2026 approved upgrading the Muzaffarpur-Sitamarhi-Sonbarsa section of NH-22 in Bihar to four lanes. The 82.578-km project will be built on Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM) at a capital cost of ₹3,590.73 crore. The corridor links the India-Nepal border at Sonbarsa with Muzaffarpur on NH-27 (East-West Corridor) and will also improve access to the Buddhist Circuit and Janaki Punaura Dham temple in Sitamarhi. It is designed for 100 kmph and includes seven major bridges, including a 340-m bridge over the Bagmati river, three rail overbridges and two flyovers.
